Top Ten Design Mistakes

Top Ten Design Mistakes
Weblog Usability: The Top Ten Design Mistakes (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)

10. Having a Domain Name Owned by a Weblog Service
Having a weblog address ending in blogspot.com, typepad.com, etc. will soon be the equivalent of having an @aol.com email address or a Geocities website: the mark of a naïve beginner who shouldn't be taken too seriously.
Letting somebody else own your name means that they own your destiny on the Internet. They can degrade the service quality as much as they want. They can increase the price as much as they want. They can add atop your content as many pop-ups, blinking banners, or other user-repelling advertising techniques as they want. They can promote your competitor's offers on your pages. Yes, you can walk, but at the cost of your loyal readers, links you've attracted from other sites, and your search engine ranking.

The longer you stay at someone else's domain name, the higher the cost of going independent. Yes, it's tempting to start a new weblog on one of the services that offer free accounts. It's easy, it's quick, and it's obviously cheap. But it only costs $8 per year to get your personal domain name and own your own future. As soon as you realize you're serious about blogging, move it away from a domain name that's controlled by somebody else. The longer you delay, the more pain you'll feel when you finally make the move.

Fire Ban in Phoenix Preserves to be Lifted Oct. 15

Fire Ban in Phoenix Preserves to be Lifted Oct. 15

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department on Oct. 15 will lift the fire ban in effect in all city of Phoenix mountain preserves. In consultation with the Phoenix Fire Department, the Parks Department is lifting the ban because of decreased fire risk throughout the preserve system. The fire ban went into effect May 14. The ban had applied to Camelback Mountain; Papago Park; all areas of the Phoenix Mountains; South Mountain Park/Preserve; and North Mountain and its adjoining areas. The fire ban did NOT apply to traditional city parks.

The 2005 preserve fire ban had prohibited:

open, wood and charcoal fires in any part of the Phoenix mountain preserves;
use of smoking materials outside of enclosed vehicles;
and use of propane or gas grills outside of established picnic areas.
All of these activities are now permitted, in accordance with existing rules. People using smoking materials and charcoal fires should still exercise caution at all times.

Former Miss America Celebrates Ability Counts Winners

Former Miss America Celebrates Ability Counts Winners

Former Miss America Heather Whitestone McCallum will share her personal story at the 2005 Ability Counts Community and Student Awards Luncheon, "Celebrate Ability: Anything is Possible," at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Phoenix Civic Plaza Ballroom, Third and Jefferson streets.

As the keynote luncheon speaker, McCallum, who lost her hearing at the age of 18 months, became the first woman with a disability to be crowned Miss America in the pageant"s 75-year history in 1995. During her year as Miss America, and in subsequent years, McCallum has tirelessly focused her efforts on motivating people to achieve their dreams through dedication, commitment and hard work. McCallum believes her disability is a blessing, that the biggest handicap is negative thinking and those who concentrate on the positive instead of the negative should be celebrated for their optimistic stance and perseverance.

Also attending the luncheon will be Heather Urick, crowned Ms. Wheelchair Arizona in March 2005, who will discuss her role as a spokesperson for persons with disabilities in Arizona.

"This special event celebrates the talents, skills and abilities of all residents, including those with disabilities," said Dan Martinez, chairman, Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues. "People with disabilities continue to make valuable contributions in the workplace and all

areas of the community."

In addition, 11 individuals and organizations will be recognized at the luncheon for their ability to overcome barriers and contribute significantly to the advancement of people with disabilities. The community award winner categories include Employee of the Year, Employer of the Year, Architectural Accessibility, Don Aldrich Advocacy, Accessible Program Award and the Phoenix Mayor's Award.

Five outstanding students with disabilities, from first grade to college, will be recognized for their personal and academic achievements. They will receive financial awards based on their grade level.

The cost of the luncheon is $35 per person or $20 for students or senior citizens. The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, Oct. 14. Proceeds benefit the Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues.

The event is sponsored by the Phoenix Mayor"s Commission on Disability Issues and Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department. Major sponsors include John F. Long Foundation, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Public Service and Maricopa County Community Colleges. It celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month created by the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities.
