Mesa Southwest Museum - What Big Teeth You Have! Crocodile Exhibit Has Bite

Mesa Southwest Museum
What Big Teeth You Have! Crocodile Exhibit Has Bite

Following the extinction of the dinosaurs, another creature quickly
moved in to claim its place at the top of the food chain. About 60 million
years ago, during the early Cenozoic Era, it was the fearsome crocodile
that ruled as the largest predator on the planet.
Beginning October 1, the Mesa Southwest Museum will present "When
Crocodiles Ruled;" an exhibit researched, developed and produced by the
Science Museum of Minnesota (SMM). This highly interactive exhibit will
run through December 31, 2005.
"When Crocodiles Ruled" tells the earth's story during the Paleocene
Epoch that occurred immediately after the dinosaurs' extinction. The
display is based on fossil discoveries from a site in western North Dakota
call Wannagan Creek where the SMM's paleontology department has been
excavating and studying fossils for more than two decades.
As visitors walk through the exhibit they will see life-size dioramas
depicting the common theory of what North Dakota looked like 60 million
years ago. Instead of dry, open ranch land, it is believed the area was a
subtropical swamp filled with crocodiles.
Another component of the exhibit is World Change Central where museum
guests can learn about geologic time (the time that the earth has existed),
the evolution of plants and animals over time and see how the world's
climate experiences continual changes.
At the Field Camp, visitors will experience the methods
paleontologists use to make discoveries, learn how fossils are excavated
and studied, search for microfossils and try their hand at assembling the
skeleton of an aquatic reptile known as a champsosaur.
Interactive components of this exhibition include hands-on activities
about animal ecosystems, animal adaptation, finding microfossils to view
through magnifying lenses, stratigraphy slide viewers, a Walk-Through
Timeline and more.
For more information on this exhibit visit our Web site at
www.mesasouthwestmuseum.com or call 480-644-4040.

Mesa Southwest Museum - Jazzy Wall Art Makes for Soulful, Expressive Exhibit

Mesa Southwest Museum - Jazzy Wall Art Makes for Soulful, Expressive Exhibit

Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and other giants of
jazz have been immortalized many times and in many ways. But this time,
visitors to the Mesa Southwest Museum will have the opportunity to
experience the jazz world recreated with fabric and thread.
Award-winning Santa Fe, NM, artist Lauren Camp created a series of 20
unique quilted artworks that convey the essence of the music, the sound and
the soul of jazz. Each piece is accompanied by one of Ms. Camp's original
poems.
Lauren Camp's "The Fabric of Jazz: A Tribute to the Genius of
American Music" will open November 12. The Arizona Quilter's Guild is
sponsoring this special exhibit that will run through April 12, 2006.
Ms. Camp is a self-taught fiber artist whose quilted images and
companion pieces have been exhibited in various museums and galleries
throughout the United States and Europe. Many of her works are housed in
numerous private and public collections, according to Rita Blocksom,
president of the Arizona Quilter's Guild.
"I took a very special trip recently...to Paducah, KY, to view 'The
Fabric of Jazz' exhibit at the Museum of the American Quilters Society,"
Ms. Blocksom said. "It is truly an amazing exhibit and I feel so
privileged and proud to have been able to see it."

Young Artists exhibition opens with public reception

TEMPE, Ariz. - The public is invited to a reception kicking off a three-week
exhibition by young Tempe artists at 7:30 p.m. on July 28 at the Tempe
Public Library, Lower Level Gallery, 3500 S. Rural Road.

The artwork, created by students enrolled in the second session of the
annual Young Artists Studio program, will be on display through Aug. 19.

The Young Artists Studio program provides the opportunity for youngsters,
ages 7 to 12, to work with arts educators, arts apprentices and volunteers
during a four-week program at the Edna Vihel Center for the Arts. As part of
the class process, participants develop skills of self-selection and peer
jurying, and are actively involved in creating their own exhibition
installations.

The program teaches children about several art techniques and methods, and
helps them to explore mixed-media concepts of texture, color, compositions,
printing methods and three-dimensional mediums, using a range of methods and
approaches. The program takes a close look at the art of multiple cultures,
both centuries-old and contemporary. Studio participants learn to combine
traditional techniques with innovative, experimental techniques using
familiar materials.

Bob Howard Comedy Shows Schedule

You have one successful show and the offers just start to roll in. Here's a schedule of upcoming shows in which I will be participating. They are all over the valley and prices vary so there should be something for just about everyone. I can vouch that each one of these shows will feature clean adult humor. You will not be bombarded with four letter words and the subject matter will be diverse.

Thursday August 4, Tapas Restaurant, Scottsdale

This will be a first time for this venue which seats about 60 to 80. Showtime has not been determined but will probably be 7:30 or 8:00pm. Cost of tickets is $10 and you can purchase them through me. Tapas is a very nice restaurant which was written up last week in the Arizona Republic. You may want to make reservations for dinner before the show and make it a full evening. Tapas is located at 7228 E. 1st Avenue, Scottsdale, Arizona (480-970-9002). I will be performing with Kelly Hunt and Tom Grayson.

Saturday September 10, Ahwautukee Country Club

This show will definitely be a sellout. Tickets are $30 which includes a full buffet dinner. Dinner is at 7:00pm with the show to follow. Jay Penn will be headlining with Tom Grayson and me rounding out the lineup. They have seating for about 220, but several tables have already been sold. Again you can get your tickets through me. I don't have an address yet, but I am sure they will give me directions by September. If you are in that area and missed the show at the Grace Inn, this is going to be a great follow-up. Contact me if you are interested.

Saturday September 17, Haus Murphy's

Finally, there is a nice venue on the west side of town and the tickets are a bargain. Haus Murphy's is a German restaurant located at 5739 W. Glendale (Grand Avenue and Glendale). You can make reservations at 623-939-2480. Show tickets are only $5, but there is no charge if you buy dinner. I'd suggest you make your reservation no later than 7:00pm if you go for dinner. There is no drink minimum. Show time is 8:00pm. They can hold about 70 people. Joining me will be Jodi Weisberg and Tom Grayson. This is a bringer show so we have told them we will fill the Haus. If you are on the west side or want to venture over there, this will be a great show. Come on down and bring your appetite.

Those are the definite shows on the schedule. I will be attending a comedy seminar in Scottsdale from August 12 to the 14th and there is a possibility I will be part of a showcase show of several comedians that Friday or Saturday at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort. I think those shows will be open to the public but I don't have a schedule or cost at this time. Also, I can't vouch for the quality of the show or whether they will give me more than a few minutes. But, there will certainly be a variety. I will keep you posted as that develops.

Thanks for marking your calendars and supporting comedy in the Valley of the Sun.

As a former smoker, I understand the enjoyment you feel as you puff on each cigarette. I realize that you have no desire to stop smoking, or you find quitting somewhat difficult since it has become part of your daily routine. As an adult, you have the right to freedom of choice. However, while you opt to exercise your freedom to smoke, why not do what’s best for you and learn how to improve your health while you smoke. Wishing you all the best.

The Ten Commandments of Grilling (adapted from the Barbecue Bible):

The Ten Commandments of Grilling (adapted from the Barbecue Bible):

Be organized. Have everything you need—the food, marinade, basting sauce, seasonings, and equipment—on hand and at grill side before you start grilling.
Gauge your fuel. There's nothing worse than running out of charcoal or gas in the middle of grilling. When using charcoal, light enough to form a bed of glowing coals 3 inches larger on all sides than the surface area of the food you're planning to cook. When using a gas grill, start with at least 1/3 of a tank of gas.
Direct grilling is a high heat cooking method. Use the "3 second" test to gauge the temperature: Place your hand about six inches above the grate. You should be able to hold it over a properly hot fire for 3 seconds.
Keep it clean. There's nothing less appetizing than grilling on dirty, old bits of burnt food stuck to the grate. Get a long-handled, stiff wire brush and use it to clean the grate. Brush after you've preheated the grill, but the food goes on. Brush again, when you've finished grilling.
Keep it lubricated. Always oil the grate before placing the food on it. Dip a folded paper towel in oil, grab it with tongs, and rub it over the bars of the grate. Or grease the grate with a piece of bacon. (The flavor is great; the amount of fat negligible.) A well-greased grate keeps food from sticking and gives you handsome grill marks.
Turn, don't stab. The proper way to turn meats on a grill is with tongs or a spatula. Never stab the meat with a carving fork—unless you want to drain the flavor-rich juices onto the coals.
Know when to baste.Oil- and vinegar-, citrus-, soy-, or yogurt-based bastes and marinades can be brushed on the meat throughout the cooking. (But not the last 5 minutes.) Brush on sweet barbecue sauces at the very end, so the sugar won't burn.
Keep it covered. When cooking larger cuts of meat, such as a whole chicken, leg of lamb, or prime rib, use the indirect grilling method. Keep the grill covered and resist the temptation to peek.
Give it a rest. Beef, steak, chicken—almost anything you grill—will taste better and be juicier if you let it stand on the cutting board for a few minutes before serving.
Never desert your post. Grilling is an easy cooking method, but it demands constant attention. Once you put something on the grill (especially when using the direct method), stay with it until it's cooked. Most of all, have fun.
Remember that grilling isn't brain surgery. And that's the gospel!
