Fourth of July 2005 Facts and Figures

Fourth of July 2005 Facts and Figures

On this day in 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress, starting the 13 colonies on the road to freedom as a sovereign nation. As always, this most American of holidays will be marked by parades, fireworks and backyard barbecues across the country.

296.5 million:

Projected number of U.S. residents on this July 4th. Back in July 1776, there were about 2.5 million people living in the colonies. (2005 population from unpublished data; 1776 population from Historical Statistics of the United States: Colonial Times to 1970.)

The Fourth of July Cookout: 150 million

Number of hot dogs (all varieties) expected to be consumed by Americans on the Fourth. (That's one frankfurter for every two people.) There's about a 1-in-4 chance that the hot dogs made of pork originated in Iowa, as the Hawkeye State had a total inventory of 16.2 million hogs and pigs on March 1, 2005. This represents more than one-fourth of the nation's total. (Data on hot dog consumption courtesy of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.)

7.3 billion pounds:

Total production of cattle and calves in Texas in 2004. Chances are that the beef hot dogs, steaks and burgers on your backyard grill came from the Lone Star State, which accounted for over one-sixth of the nation's total production.

6:

Number of states in which the revenue from chicken broilers was $1 billion or greater in 2004. There is a good chance that one of these states Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama, North Carolina, Mississippi or Texas is the source of your barbecued chicken.

Better than 50-50:

The odds that the beans in your side dish of baked beans came from North Dakota, Michigan or Nebraska, which produced 58 percent of the nation's dry, edible beans in 2004. Another popular July 4th side dish is corn on the cob. California and Florida together accounted for about 45 percent of the value of sweet corn produced nationally in 2004.

One-half:

Amount of the nation's spuds produced in Idaho or Washington in 2004. Potato salad and potato chips are also popular food items at July 4th barbecues.

Nearly 69 million:

Number of Americans who said they have taken part in a barbecue during the previous year. It's probably safe to assume a lot of these events took place on Independence Day. See Table 1238, 2004-2005 edition:

Fireworks: $164.2 million

The value of fireworks imported from China in 2004, representing the bulk of all U.S. fireworks imports ($172.5 million). U.S. exports of fireworks, by comparison, came to just $14.3 million in 2004, with Japan purchasing more than any other country ($4.7 million).

$17.3 million:

The value of U.S. manufacturers' shipments of fireworks in 2002.

Flags: $5.2 million

The dollar value of U.S. imports of American flags in 2004; the vast majority of this amount ($4.8 million) was for U.S. flags made in China.

$851,000:

Dollar value of U.S. flag exports in 2004. Mexico was the leading customer, purchasing $312,000 worth.

$349 million:

Annual dollar value of shipments of fabricated flags, banners and similar emblems by the nation's manufacturers, according to the latest published Economic Census (2002) data.

Patriotic-Sounding Places: 30

Number of places nationwide with "libert at least one of their parents was born abroad.

53 percent:

Percentage of the nation's foreign-born population born in Latin America, as of 2004.

Fourth of July Celebration in Gatlinburg Tennessee Includes the Nation's First 4th of July Parade and last 4th of July Fireworks Show

706,000:

Number of immigrants granted legal permanent residence in the United States during fiscal year 2003. One in four settled in California, and 1-in-10 in the New York metro area.

463,000:

Number of people who became naturalized U.S. citizens during fiscal 2003. Mexico contributed the highest number of naturalized citizens in 2003 (56,100), followed by India (29,800), the Philippines (29,100), Vietnam (26,000) and China (24,000).

July 4th Space Show to have Real 'Deep Impact'

July 4th Space Show to have Real 'Deep Impact'

U.S. Spacecraft Will Have Planned Collision With Comet to Discover Information About the Origins of the Solar System

If you thought the movie Deep Impact was dramatic, just imagine the real thing -- a planned collision between a U.S. built spacecraft and a comet known as Tempel-1. The event is scheduled for the 4th of July and it is hoped that it will unlock long-held secrets of the origins of our solar system.

Ball Aerospace, which has built instruments for Hubble, Spitzer and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter launching in August, designed and built the Deep Impact spacecraft. This NASA Discovery Mission is a collaboration between NASA, the University Of Maryland, The California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp.

When they collide at about 23,000 miles per hour, the impact will equal nearly 5 tons of TNT. The crater in the comet could be as large as a football stadium and 14-stories deep.

Loop 202 is a "No Stopping" zone during July 4th Tempe Town Lake Festival

Loop 202 is a "No Stopping" zone during July 4th Tempe Town Lake Festival

Authorities have a short message for drivers who are on the Loop 202 Red
Mountain Freeway during the 4th of July celebration at Tempe Town Lake: No
Stopping.

"It's just not safe to stop on the freeway," said Department of Public
Safety Officer Frank Valenzuela. "Drivers need to keep their eyes on the
road and keep moving. Our officers will be prepared to take enforcement
action should drivers try to stop along the freeway."

Last year DPS officers responded to nine minor crashes associated with
drivers slowing abruptly or trying to park on the shoulder of the Loop 202
while the annual fireworks show was underway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will post electronic
messages along the Red Mountain Freeway over the weekend to remind drivers
that parking is not allowed on the freeway during the fireworks show.

Tempe Police Commander Phil Harris says people coming to the festival should
arrive early and find parking in city lots within easy walking distance of
Tempe Town Lake.

"The freeway ramps at Scottsdale Road will be closed before the fireworks
begin," said Commander Harris. "Our officers will be prepared to assist DPS
in keeping the traffic moving along the freeway."

Spectators also are reminded that bus service in Tempe is free all day on
July 4.

Councilman Mattox Donates $52,500 to Charities

District 5 Councilman Claude Mattox recently delivered checks totaling more than $50,000 to four local charities. The donations were the proceeds from the Councilman’s recent Margarita Bash party at Cricket Pavilion in west Phoenix.

The donations included $15,000 to the United Phoenix Firefighters Association Adopt-A-Fence program and $12,500 each to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the Grand Canyon Wrestling Club and the Jacori Rufus Memorial Scholarship. The wrestling club is a program for Phoenix youth and the scholarship helps Maryvale High School students pay for college.

“This is a great way to support the community, with programs that benefit young people in west Phoenix,” said Mattox. “We have a good time and raise money for great causes. I appreciate the community’s support.”

The Adopt-A-Fence program provides pool fences for Phoenix families.

“We are dependent on efforts like Councilman Mattox’s to make our program a success,” said Captain Rich Bauer, director of Community Programs for the United Phoenix Firefighters Association. “Pool fences are absolutely critical for saving children’s lives.”

This is the third charity event Councilman Mattox has held, raising more than $85,000 altogether. He is planning another one for 2006.

The State of the US Commercial Credit Card Market

The State of the US Commercial Credit Card Market
Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

This report provides a review of the US commercial card market, its segments, and key business requirements of medium to large corporations.

Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 23, 2005 -- As the growth in consumer credit card volume has slowed, commercial cards have been a major driver of growth for the U.S. card market. The commercial card purchase volume showed double digit growth rates over the last decade and reached $264 billion by the end of 2003. The share of commercial cards within the Visa and MasterCard total general-purpose card volume also increased continuously during this time.

Despite the remarkable growth and the intense competition, the market potential is still far from being tapped. According to Visa's new Commercial Consumption Expenditure (CCE) index, the US commercial spending will reach $14.3 trillion this year; almost twice the size estimated by its Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) index, which forecasts $8.2 trillion for 2004. However, commercial cards are not often used as a primary payment method and only account for a small sahre of total commercial spending. There are major barriers to increasing use of electronic payments, such as data integration challenges, and checks continue to be the dominant payment method in the B2B environment.

Evren Bayri, Director of Mercator Advisory Group's Credit Advisory Service comments, "in order to increase the share of commecial cards within B2B payments, issuers should recognize the complex needs of organizations. Barriers to increasing the use of commercial cards can be removed by delivering data-rich/process aware solutions such as the American Express Variance Report, Bank of America Payment Manager and MasterCard e-P3 (tm)."

This report provides:

1. An analysis of the overall state of the commercial card industry,

2. An estimate of Visa, MasterCard, and American Express market shares for 2003,

3. A breakout by segment of purchase volume,

4. A discussion on data integration issues,

5. A table of value-added services and products in commercial card market.

This report provides a review of the US commercial card market, its segments, and key business requirements of medium to large corporations.

The report contains 21 pages and 14 exhibits.
