In January, Ken Peplowski and The Kingdom of Swing Big Band will revisit Benny Goodman’s famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert, which opened the door for jazz to be appreciated as the true American art form. The band, which features a number of Benny Goodman Orchestra alumni, will perform such hits as “One o’clock Jump,” “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” “Don’t Be That Way” and “the climactic finale “Sing, Sing, Sing.”, “Sing! Sing! Sing!” will appear in the Ikeda Theater at Mesa Arts Center at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14 as part of the Performing Live! series. ----
The late great Mel Tormé once said, “Since the advent of Benny Goodman, there have been too few clarinetists to fill the void that Goodman left. Ken Peplowski is most certainly one of those few. The man is magic.”
The New York Times, reviewing a concert of his, quoted that Peplowski is “Goodman Straight Up With a Twist of Lighting.” His musicianship being compared to magic and lightening only captures a bit of Ken’s virtuosity and musicianship on both the clarinet and Saxophone. Ken is not only an outstanding musician; he is a charismatic entertainer that has been delighting audiences for more than 30 years with his warmth, wit and humor.
“When you grow up in Cleveland playing in a Polish polka band, you learn to think fast on your feet,” said Peplowski.
