On a Tuesday morning at Parham Elementary School in Evanston, 10-year-old Kahlille Hummons is concentrating hard on playing her half-size violin. She plays a scale, projecting a big, clear tone with natural ease. Then she listens intently as her teacher, Kesiana Ymeri, plays a piece called "Allegro" and imitates it note-perfectly.
"She has just blossomed with it," says her mother, Sanita Richardson, 27, a single mom and full-time student with three other children.
Kahlille is learning to play the violin through the Touchstone Project, which provides free lessons to 245 children in four area schools. Without Touchstone, the group violin lessons Kahlille gets twice weekly would be an impossible dream.
"Right now, it's financially challenging for me," her mother says. "It's time-consuming, but because (the lessons) are at school, I don't have to do the transporting. Since they furnish the equipment, that helps as well."
