An innovative conservation program is bringing much needed help to America's fight to save its dwindling wide open spaces. "Acres for America" is a $35 million project designed to preserve critical wildlife habitat for future generations. The new program, launched at the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. is a partnership between the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and Wal-Mart. It's a new model for conservation in the United States and is one of the largest public-private partnerships.

"Acres for America" will permanently conserve one acre of priority wildlife habitat for every acre of Wal-Mart's current footprint, estimated at 88,000 acres, as well as the company's future development over the next 10 years, estimated at 5,000 acres per year, putting the total acres to be protected at 138,000.
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation is a nonprofit organization established by Congress in 1984 and dedicated to the conservation of fish, wildlife and plants, and the habitat on which they depend.
Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. operates Wal-Mart Stores, Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and SAM'S CLUB locations in the United States.
