The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture (POAC) was established by the Phoenix City Council in 1985 to protect, enhance, serve and advocate excellence in the arts in Phoenix and to raise the level of awareness and involvement of all city residents in the preservation, expansion and enjoyment of the arts.

The POAC is responsible for directing a public art program, administering grants in support of the arts, fostering arts education programs in the schools, providing assistance to arts organizations and artists and advocating for the arts.

City Council established the Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission, 18 or more citizen volunteers appointed by the mayor and City Council, to act as an advisory body on arts-related matters. City staff administer the POAC's programs and services. Additionally, nearly 100 citizens and arts professionals serve each year on POAC panels, which make recommendations on artist selection and grant awards. Panel recommendations are reviewed by the commission and approved by the Phoenix City Council.

The POAC's operating expenses are supported by the city's general purpose funds, percent for art funds, state lottery revenue, and regional and federal grants.

GREG GILBERT / THE SEATTLE TIMES
Gallery owners Carm Pierce, foreground, and Alan Mizuta have included an art gallery in their industrial-design company's space on Hill Avenue in Everett.

Everett's industrial district, east of Broadway, may one day play host to art-friendly businesses.
Location the economy of being in Everett versus Seattle and a 100-year-old building with open timbers and New York-style lofts appealed to Carm Pierce and his partner, Alan Mizuta, for Built Corp., their industrial-design company and art gallery. "

October 2004 (Newstream) -- CORE Construction Services of Arizona, Inc. and ADM Group will work with Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc., a non-profit community development corporation, to turn a breezeway of an outdoor retail mall into an art center to display the works of local artists. This project is part of a community "give back" program that CORE Construction and ADM Group lead to help local organizations and communities with their growing needs.

An inaugural event included attendees such as US Congressman Ed Pastor, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, Assistant to the Governor Ana Chavez, City of Phoenix Councilman Michael Johnson, President/CEO of Chicanos Por La Causa, Pete Garcia and Jon Dudas, Under Secretary EDA from Washington DC.

The Chicanos Por La Causa organization will use the 1,500 square feet breezeway as a place to display art and as a recreational area to host receptions and community meetings. The retail/commercial center project is located at 1122 E. Buckeye Road in Phoenix. Cosmopolitan Magazine Kicks Off 40th Birthday with Multi-Million Dollar Advertising Campaign

Cosmopolitan Magazine Kicks Off 40th Birthday with Multi-Million Dollar Advertising Campaign

October 2004 (Newstream) -- Cosmopolitan is turning 40 in 2005 and the magazine has big plans to celebrate this milestone in true Cosmo style. In recognition of its ongoing success as today's leading women's magazine and the barriers it has broken down on behalf of women, Senior Vice President and Publishing Director Donna Kalajian Lagani announces the debut of a multi-million dollar advertising campaign with the tagline We're Cosmopolitan.

We're Cosmopolitan celebrates what the modern-day woman has become thanks to the magazine's Fun, Fearless, Female message. The Tagline We're Cosmopolitan will be used in addition to Fun, Fearless, Female in the magazine's advertising. Over 40 years ago, Cosmopolitan told women that they could have everything they wanted in life without apologizing for it and the campaign embodies that spirit. We're Cosmopolitan was created by the LPNY advertising agency. The ads portray a group of celebratory, confident and empowered women in a series of black-and-white images shot by renowned photographer Roxanne Lowitt, best known for her documentary-style celebrity photos.

The multi-million dollar campaign launches on October 11 in publications including Advertising Age, Mediaweek, Automotive News and Cosmetic World. It will also appear in Women's Wear Daily, Interview and The New York Times throughout 2004. Other promotional elements include more than 100 king-size posters on New York City buses and two construction scaffold wraps on Park Avenue South and Madison Avenue.

"We're Cosmopolitan is a statement about the extraordinary success of our past 40 years and the brighter than even future of Cosmopolitan," said Lagani. "The fact that we get bigger and better with every passing year makes Cosmopolitan one of today's most recognized and respected brands. There is a lot to be said for that in this age of flash-in-the-pan popularity, especially in the publishing world."

Cosmopolitan created the formula for what a successful women's magazine should be and never looked back. After four decades it has long outlasted the shelf life of other titles in its category. Under Editor-in-Chief Kate White and Lagani's solid direction, the magazine's sales and circulation continue to rise, up 7% over the first six months of last year. It now sells approximately 3 million copies a month, the largest circulation for a monthly women's magazine in the United States. Cosmopolitan is also one of the biggest international magazine brands with more than 50 editions around the world including China, India, Israel, Russia, South Africa, and Australia.

Cosmopolitan will continue to celebrate its 40th birthday throughout 2005 with special editorial tributes and events.

Cosmopolitan is published by Hearst Magazines, a unit of The Hearst Corporation (www.hearst.com) and one of the world's largest publishers of monthly magazines, with a total of 18 U.S. titles and 137 international editions. Hearst's magazines are read by more U.S. adult women than any other monthly magazine publisher. The company also publishes 18 magazines in the United Kingdom through its wholly owned subsidiary, The National Magazine Company Limited.

Howard Stern and SIRIUS Radio Announce the Most Important Deal in Radio History

Howard Stern and SIRIUS Radio Announce the Most Important Deal in Radio History
Wednesday October 6, 8:37 am ET
Radio Innovator Signs Five-Year Agreement to Broadcast on SIRIUS Beginning in 2006
Landmark Deal for SIRIUS and Satellite Radio Industry, With Significant Potential to Accelerate Growth for SIRIUS

NEW YORK, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- "King of All Media" Howard Stern and SIRIUS Satellite Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI - News) announced today an epic agreement whereby Stern will move to SIRIUS beginning January 1, 2006. SIRIUS is the premium satellite radio provider known for delivering the very best in commercial-free music and sports programming to cars and homes across the country.
(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19991118/NYTH125 )
The world-renowned Stern is credited with revolutionizing the talk radio format. He is the No. 1 national radio host among males 18-49 years of age and ranks No. 1 in many of the 46 major markets where his show is broadcast, including New York and Los Angeles.

"It has been my dream to have the top-rated show in radio since I was five years old," said Stern. "SIRIUS -- the future of radio -- will take this dream to a whole new level as I bring my fans my show my way. It will be the best radio they will ever hear."

Known for his extremely loyal fan base and for his unequalled ability to migrate fans to other media, Stern has embarked on numerous highly successful ventures over the years while maintaining dominant ratings in his demographic. Stern has written two best-selling books -- Private Parts, which was Simon & Schuster's fastest-selling book ever, and Miss America, the fastest-selling book in publishing history. He later starred in the highly successful motion picture adaptation of Private Parts, orchestrated the fastest-selling soundtrack in motion picture history and starred in the most watched entertainment pay-per-view special of all time. "The Howard Stern Show" is E! Entertainment Television's most successful show.

"Signing Howard Stern is, without a doubt, the most exciting and transformational event in the history of radio," said Joseph P. Clayton, CEO of SIRIUS. "He is an entertainment force of unprecedented recognition and popularity in the broadcast world, who is capable of changing the face of satellite radio and generating huge numbers of subscribers for SIRIUS."

"Howard is an incredible creative and comedic icon, and we are thrilled that he chose SIRIUS to broadcast what everyone believes will be the most exciting part of his career," said Scott Greenstein, SIRIUS President of Entertainment and Sports. "There is absolutely no one like Howard Stern, and I'm excited that, for the first time, his show will be heard across the entire country as it was always meant to be heard."

Greenstein negotiated the five-year, multi-million dollar agreement with Don Buchwald, who represents Stern.

Buchwald said: "An important new industry is being developed and Howard wants to be its leader. He is truly excited to be working with SIRIUS, which will not only provide a new and innovative platform for his broadcast talents, but will draw on his skills as a businessman. SIRIUS has offered Howard and his fans a great opportunity to be a part of something truly remarkable, and we look forward to a spectacular future."

Through SIRIUS' nationwide broadcast system, Stern will be heard in every market across the country. Moreover, Stern's tremendous popularity among males 18-49 matches perfectly with SIRIUS' target demographic.

SIRIUS estimates that Stern only would need to generate approximately one million subscribers in order to cover the costs of the deal. Total production and operating costs for the Stern show, including compensation of the show cast and staff, overhead, construction costs for a dedicated studio, and a budget for the development of additional programming and marketing concepts, is estimated to be channels of the best commercial-free music, sports, information and entertainment, with digital quality sound coast-to-coast, broadcast daily from New York City, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Orleans, Houston and Daytona. SIRIUS offers 65 channels of 100% commercial-free music, and features 55 channels of world-class sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic and weather for a monthly subscription fee of only $12.95, with greater savings for upfront payments of multiple months or a year or more. SIRIUS also broadcasts live play-by-play games of the NHL and the NFL, and is the Official Satellite Radio partner of the NFL.

SIRIUS Satellite Radio products for the car, truck, home, RV and boat are manufactured by Alpine, Audiovox, Blaupunkt, Clarion, Eclipse, Jensen, JVC, Kenwood, Panasonic, Sanyo and U.S. Electronics, and can be purchased at major retailers including Advance Auto Parts, Best Buy, Car Toys, Circuit City, Crutchfield, Good Guys, Wal-Mart, Sears, Tweeter and Ultimate Electronics, along with RadioShack and DISH Network outlets.
