Artist and Interior designer, Bobby Beard, will be in the Studio at Studio 249 in Hudson, NY

Artist and Interior designer, Bobby Beard, will be in the Studio at Studio 249 in Hudson, NY
The work of painter, installation artist and designer, Robert Roane Beard will be on view in the Studio at Studio 249, 249 Warren Street, Hudson, NY 12534 during Arts Walk. October 2004

(PRWEB) September 28, 2004 -- New York artist, Bobby Beard will show a survey of paintings in the experimental 3rd floor Studio of the gallery "Studio 249" in Hudson, NY during the Hudson, NY Arts Walk in the Hudson Valley.
September 25th to October 23rd, 2004 and by appointment.

Mr. Beard showed his Installation, "Thinking of You" in 2003 at Studio 249 in Hudson.

This year he will exhibit a series of abstract watercolors and acrylic paintings completed over the last two years.

The watercolors are from his travels to Morocco, India, Upstate New York, Turkey.

This fall Mr. Beard will be traveling to India, Calcutta and Orissa, for inspiration for next year's exhibitions.

The larger acrylics are abstract studies in Black.

"The installation, "Thinking of You" is a meditation on the lives of ten friends who have died of AIDS.

As the enclosed photos show, the work consists of a circle of ten piers, each surmounted by a white plaster head and bearing handwritten text that winds around the pier.

The text takes the form of a letter to the deceased
with news of people, places and things that were of particular interest to him and to me.

Because the text winds around the piers, the viewer circles each one while reading, thus gaining a spatial feel for what I intended to be a peaceful circle of remembrance.

Among the ten subject are the art dealer Aladar Marberger, magazine editor Duncan Stalker and landscape architect and designer of Strawberry Fields, Bruce Kelly."

This installation was shown at
Spazio Opus, in Milan, Italy;
Museo del Po in Turin
Studio 249 in Hudson, NY.

The work needs to find a permanent home.

"Thinking of You" had rave reviews in the Italian, Journal of Art.

Mr. Beard has exhibited his work in New York, London, Paris, Milan, Turin, Tangier and South Africa.

The Georgia Native has lived and worked in New York City, The Hudson Valley and Miami Beach for the last 21 years.

He attended the University of Georgia, In Athens, Georgia and is from Atlanta.

Last Minute Travel - Air travel - Cruise travel - Discount Travel - Travel Search Site News

Last Minute Travel - Air travel - Cruise travel - Discount Travel - Travel Search Site News

Site59 Launches New Search Engine ``The 59th-Minute Dash''; Search Less and Find More

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 2004--Site59, the leading seller of deeply discounted last-minute travel packages online, writes a new page in travel history with today's launch of the 59th-Minute Dash: a powerfully fast new search engine and results page that deliver the power of 50 searches in one. The new engine gives consumers maximum choice and flexibility whether they know their exact travel dates and destination or they are open-minded in their planning.

To provide consumers the "personal touch" often associated with the advice of an expert, this new search engine uses Site59's unique library of last-minute package inventory and patent-pending functionality unrivaled in online travel.

When consumers search by date and destination, Site59 works like a personal shopper -- not only returning the requested results, but also including relevant alternatives displayed in a new dashboard view. Alternatives include: other dates for the chosen destination, nearby and regional destinations for the chosen dates, and other relevant destinations for the chosen dates based on matching categories such as "Beach," "Big City," and "Golf." All options are shown with easy-to-compare pricing including taxes from the consumer's departure city, eliminating the inconvenient multiple searches and back-clicking that travelers must endure on other sites to save a buck or find what they want.

"Now travelers can see in a glance if staying an extra night will save them money, or if choosing another date or destination will offer them a better value," said Robert Albert, General Manager of Site59, a Travelocity Company.

Does Adding Two Nights in Bermuda and Saving $22 Sound Right?

A recent search on Site59 for the weekend of September 24th showed that New York City to Bermuda Friday to Sunday cost $606 per person for flight + hotel. With the new results page, consumers could easily see that they could save $22 per person by adding two nights and staying until Tuesday -- for a total of $584 per person. Prices for the same trip were also available for other dates. Further down the dashboard, six other Caribbean trips were listed from Nassau to Aruba priced $442-$571, followed by other domestic beach trips, starting at $334 -- all for the same dates.

Travelers Who Don't Know Can Still Go

Unlike other travel sites, Site59 doesn't require that travelers know where and when they want to go before showing the deals. The new search engine offers the incomparable flexibility of responding to open-ended requests such as "Europe this weekend" or "See all destinations this Friday-Sunday" so travelers can plan their trips with as much or as little information as they have decided. After choosing their departure city, consumers can choose to search by weekend or region, or refine their search by destination or specific date.

"Site59 has again revolutionized the travel shopping experience, making it easy for travelers to get away as often as they like," said Albert, "When planning a quick getaway, sometimes destination is important, but often travelers are just looking to get a great deal on 'anywhere but here' this weekend."

Site59 Last-Minute Getaways include flight + hotel (and optional car), flight + car and hotel + car, and they are available to hundreds of domestic and international destinations, from more than 100 U.S. cities, every day. Bookings can be made from 14 days in advance up to three hours before departure. Site59 is the only deeply discounted travel site that ensures consumers can choose their exact hotel, airline flights, and rental cars and earn frequent flier miles.

Resident Evil Apocalypse

Resident Evil Apocalypse
September 13, 2004 --

ANCHOR LEAD: How would you feel if one day you woke up and everyone turned in to blood thirsty Zombies? T.K. Anderson has the details. (: 60)

SCRIPT: Entertainment Now, I'm T.K. Anderson. Mike Epps is best known for his role as Day Day Jones in Ice Cube's Next Friday. Now he tackles a new role in Resident Evil Apocalypse. Mike plays LJ, a survivor who wakes up in Raccoon city, which is fast becoming a city of the dead. He must escape along with Alice; played by Milla Jovovich before the zombies and the Umbrella Corp find them. Mike explains why Resident Evil Apocalypse is worth it if you're down to your last $8.

CUT: (Epps) You need to take that $8 right and go get some deodorant, and go get some Zig zags, and get a Fago pop right. Save about 4 more of those dollars till when you get in the film. And tell those people that you're Gray Coleman's brother and they will let you in the movie.

SCRIPT: All jokes aside Mike says Resident Evil Apocalypse will not disappoint.

CUT: (Epps) Hey man its action packed man. You know it got a great storyline. The people are going to be able to really sit down and enjoy it and its good man.

SCRIPT: Next up for Mike is The Honeymooners with Cedric the Entertainer. Resident Evil Apocalypse is in theaters now. I 'm T.K. Anderson.

Save Betamax - National Call-In Day September 14

Save Betamax

Why Save Betamax?
The short version: We're organizing a call-in day to Congress on September 14 to oppose new legislation that would undermine the Betamax decision (INDUCE Act).

Here's why: The Betamax VCR died more than 15 years ago, but the Supreme Court decision that made the Betamax and all other VCRs legal lived on. In Sony vs. Universal (known as the Betamax decision) the Court ruled that because VCRs have legitimate uses, the technology is legal—even if some people use it to copy movies.

EFF: Letter to Senator Hatch

July 6, 2004

The Honorable Orrin G. Hatch
Chairman
United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary
224 Dirksen Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

RE: S. 2560, the "Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act of 2004"

Dear Chairman Hatch:

The undersigned organizations and companies respectfully request that you hold hearings on S. 2560, the "Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act of 2004" before your Committee takes any action, in order to fully explore the critical issues raised by this legislation.

We understand your concerns for protecting children and addressing activity that infringes copyright. We share these concerns. As currently conceived, however, S. 2560 would undermine the 20-year old Supreme Court decision in Sony v. Universal City Studios, 464 U.S. 417 (1984) ("Betamax"). InBetamax, the Supreme Court held that the manufacturer of a product could not be held secondarily liable for infringing uses of the product by others so long as the product was capable of substantial noninfringing uses. In other words, technology, in and of itself, could rarely be considered unlawful in the copyright context.

Georgia O'Keeffe Museum presents first-ever landscape retrospective

Georgia O'Keeffe Museum presents first-ever landscape retrospective

SANTA FE, NM—Georgia O'Keeffe was instantly drawn to New Mexico's unusual and starkly beautiful landscape from the moment she first saw it in 1917. In an interview many years later she recalled: “From then on, I was always trying to get back there and in 1929 I finally made it.” Georgia O'Keeffe and New Mexico: A Sense of Place, June 11-September 12, 2004 is the first exhibition that features O'Keeffe's celebrated New Mexico landscapes. Because this unique and fascinating exhibition includes paintings that have long been in private collections, it provides an unusual opportunity to view works by O'Keeffe that have seldom been available to the public.

The exhibition documents O'Keeffe's extraordinary ability to capture the contours, colors, and textures of the land that fascinated her while remaining true to her life-long interest in and commitment to exploring issues of abstraction. According to Museum Curator Barbara Buhler Lynes, “A Sense of Place is the first exhibition to explore the meaning and significance of O'Keeffe's New Mexico landscape paintings, and it provides new and important information about the relationship between these paintings and the specific sites that inspired them.”

In addition to displaying 50 paintings that O'Keeffe depicted from 1929 to the early 1950s, the exhibition presents color photographs of 20 of the actual sites that inspired them. From the time O'Keeffe began painting in New Mexico, her landscapes have often been mistaken for imagined forms, but they are entirely based on what she was looking at and thus, the exhibition provides a new perspective from which to understand the relationship between the sources of her work and the works themselves.

An accompanying exhibition catalogue, published by Princeton University Press includes color reproductions of all works and photographs in the exhibition and offers essays by Barbara Buhler Lynes, curator of the exhibition, who has written extensively on O'Keeffe and her work, and noted authors, Lesley Poling-Kempes, and Frederick W. Turner. These essays discuss O'Keeffe's paintings and their relationship to the places that inspired her, the geology of the region from which her landscape paintings derive, and the ways in which her aloofness from the Santa Fe art community enhanced her presence as a force within it.

After being on view in Santa Fe, the exhibition, Georgia O'Keeffe and New Mexico: A Sense of Place, travels first to the Columbus Art Museum (October 1, 2004-January 16, 2005), and then to the Delaware Art Museum (February 17-May 15, 2005), where it will commemorate the opening of that museum's new building.

Record year for Mesa Convention Center

Record year for Mesa Convention Center

The Mesa Convention Center, formerly known as
the Mesa Centennial Center, has completed the most successful
year in its 25-year history, with more than $2.68 million in gross
revenue generated from more than 1,200 individual events during
the fiscal year ended June 30, 2004.

The 60,000 square-foot complex, which includes the
15,000 square-foot Centennial Hall and the popular Mesa
Amphitheatre, was originally opened in 1978 as the centerpiece
of the city's 100th anniversary celebration. Since that time, many
thousands of events, meetings and concerts have taken place at
the facility, including hundreds of commercial concerts at the
4,200-seat Amphitheatre, frequently named as one of the top
outdoor musical venues in the Phoenix area.

Offering a full range of audio-visual support services
and in-house catering and banquet planning, the Mesa Convention
Center is uniquely positioned in the East Valley as a site for
mid-range gatherings. Conveniently adjacent to the Phoenix
Marriott Mesa Hotel, the combined facilities provide a single
location for event planners looking for a convenient and
self-contained convention experience.

Lou Guarnaccia publicly protests the proposed Nantucket Sound wind farm - by altering a painting

By Catherine Fahy
I&M Staff Writer

As a form of protest against a proposed wind farm in Nantucket Sound Saturday on Main Street, artist Lou Guarnaccia alters his painting “Sailing Pristine Waters of Nantucket Sound” by adding dozens of wind turbines.
After losing a couple nights’ sleep worrying what Nantucket Sound might look like with a forest of wind turbines sprouting from Horseshoe Shoal, artist Louis Guarnaccia decided to share his vision by translating it into a painting for other people to see.

SMOCA EXHBITIONS SHOWCASE ABSTRACT ART Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art

SMOCA EXHBITIONS SHOWCASE ABSTRACT ART
The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is opening two new exhibitions that explore the subject of abstract art. Both exhibitions are drawn entirely from the Museum's permanent collection, which has been growing at a brisk pace in recent years thanks to a number of important gifts.
** "The Abstract Eye: Selections from the Permanent Collection" runs Sept. 11 through Oct. 24. It features abstract paintings from SMoCA's holdings that focus our attention on the act of seeing. Included is one of the Museum's newest acquisitions by Julian Stanczak as well as canvases by Charles Hinman, Hans Hofmann, Robert Motherwell, Paul Reed and Dorothy Fratt, among others.
** "Joseph Albers: Seeing in Color" runs Sept. 25 through Jan. 2. It features the artist's silkscreen portfolio "Formulation: Articulation," 1972. Albers conceived this two-volume set (generously gifted to SMoCA's permanent collection by Karla and Walter Goldschmidt) in tandem with his earlier "Interaction of Color," 1963, as a way to continue his teaching long after his lifetime.
A public reception on the exhibitions takes place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the museum. For more information, call
